Service to the Profession
The DC Bar was established by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in 1972 as a unified bar association that would uphold the ethical standards and rules of professional conduct. A primary function of the Bar is to enroll, inform, collect dues from, and discipline District of Columbia lawyers. Under the direction of the Board of Governors and the Executive Director, and with more than 100 employees and a budget of more than $20 million, the DC Bar is well-equipped to serve its 85,000 members, support its 21 standing committees, 21 Sections, the Office of Bar Counsel, and the Board on Professional Responsibility.
I believe in supporting Service to the Profession by:
- Work-Life
…encouraging all District lawyers to strike a workable balance between career and family.
- Mentoring
…building on the mentoring initiatives of current DC Bar President James Sandman. Mentoring, as President Sandman has noted, is an important and effective way to "cultivate the next generation of leaders in the nation's best bar."
- Diversity
…striving to achieve greater diversity in participation in Bar activities and appointments.
- Case/Client Management
…emphasizing the importance of excellence in law office management. The practice of law is also the business of law whether you work with a private firm, the government, a non-profit organization, a corporation, or alone. Good case and client management practices will help District lawyers serve their clients better and steer clear of the disciplinary system.
- Greater Voice for the Bar
…supporting the excellent work of the Sections and Voluntary Bar Associations. The Sections and Voluntary Bar Associates have the ability – and responsibility - to speak out on these issues and, to the greatest extent possible, the DC Bar should support them in their efforts.
- Attorney Discipline
…encouraging the on-going review and improvement of the attorney disciplinary process by supporting the work of the Disciplinary System Study Committee, and support the work of the Rules and Regulation Committee.
