Service to the Courts
The DC Bar is a creation of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and its members have the privilege of appearing before the District of Columbia local and federal courts. District lawyers have a special obligation to work with the courts to ensure that the justice system is operating fairly for all District citizens. Having practiced before the District courts for nearly twenty years, and having served as the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, I have insight into how the DC Bar membership can assist the courts in their important function.
I believe in supporting Service to the Courts by:
- Delivery of Justice
…continuing my work with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on special projects designed to improve the delivery of justice. I worked closely with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in the development of the Domestic Violence Court, the Family Court, and the Community Court.
- Caseloads
…addressing the pressing needs of the courts, such as the recent increase in cases before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals originating from the Office of Administrative Hearings, and the need for lawyers with experience in mental health cases.
- Court Programs/Operations
…advocating, on behalf of the local courts, for adequate funding of court programs and operations.
- Organizations
…supporting the work of organizations, such as the Council for Court Excellence and the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, whose primary focus is the improvement of the justice system.
